The HydroGEN Advanced Water Splitting Materials consortium aims to accelerate the research, development, and deployment of advanced water splitting technologies for clean, sustainable hydrogen production.

HydroGEN is a consortium of six U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratories that will address advanced water splitting materials challenges by making unique, world-class national lab capabilities in photoelectrochemical, solar thermochemical, and low- and high-temperature electrolytic water splitting more accessible to academia, industry, and other national labs.

About HydroGEN

The HydroGEN consortium is led by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and includes Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, Idaho National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and Savannah River National Laboratory. HydroGEN is funded by DOE’s Fuel Cell Technologies Office in the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.

HydroGEN aims to facilitate collaborations between federal laboratories, academia and industry. The consortium is guided by a steering committee with representatives from each member lab and DOE. The steering committee is available to clarify the capabilities offered by the consortium and to help interested users identify capabilities relevant to a given research project.

HydroGEN is part of the DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s Energy Materials Network (EMN), which was launched at the White House in February 2016. The EMN is a network of lab-led consortia that was launched in support of the President's 2011 Materials Genome Initiative (MGI) and the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership. The goal of the MGI is to expedite the deployment of new materials to market by 2X, and increase new materials' likelihood of being commercialized by ensuring closer integration between researchers and industry throughout the development process.

Each EMN consortium focuses on a specific materials class and will follow four key defining principles:

  1. Identifying and assembling world-class capabilities that are unique to the national laboratories
  2. Assisting interested stakeholders in identifying capabilities that are relevant to their application
  3. Launching user-friendly online portals of materials data
  4. Expediting access to the labs through short-form versions of contractual agreements.

Access to HydroGEN capabilities is currently available through standard lab agreements, including cooperative research and development agreements (CRADAs) and strategic partnership projects, as well as partnered support through Fuel Cell Technologies Office funding opportunity announcements. Short-form, rapid versions of these agreements are in development.
